Welcome to the Literary Giveaway Blog Hop!
I don’t normally take part or host giveaways or hops but I love this event hosted by Judith at Leeswammes – The Literary Giveaway Blog Hop is a celebration of literary fiction for those of us who like giveaways but prefer the bookish prizes to be a little more interesting than YA or paranormal romance.
Between today and 13FEB you can hop to about 40 book blogs, all offering one or more giveaways of books or bookish items. All books will be literary fiction or something close to that. Follow the links at the bottom of this post to find the other participating blogs. :)
As part of the blog hop I will be giving away the winner’s choice of one of these books:
Life After Life by Kate Atkinson
Due out in March this is one of those books you want to tell everyone about… but you don’t want to ruin by giving anything away! It tells the story of Ursula Todd and the lives she could, did and didn’t have. Beginning with two accounts of the same day in 1910, one where Ursula is born and one where she doesn’t make it, this goes on to share Ursula’s many near misses, decisive moments and second chances across the twentieth century. You’re going to be hearing a lot about this book, this is your chance to get hold of my proof copy. :)
The Loved One by Evelyn Waugh
This had me in fits of giggles last month and is my favourite book of 2013 so far, I’d love to share it with you. Waugh turns his very sly wit on the weird and wonderful burial rites of rich Americans in this dark comedy. It’s a world where the deceased are known as ‘The Loved Ones’, the burial firm offer you a stained glass window in your sarcophagus and even pet burials get doves released and cannons fired… If you don’t mind your comedy a little out there, this is a great way to shake off the winter blues. (My review)
Black Vodka by Deborah Levy
This brand new short story collection by the Man Booker nominated author is due out on 26FEB from And Other Stories. It’s already receiving enthusiastic reviews from other subscribers but I confess I am one of the handful of readers who don’t click with Levy so my copy is up for grabs. If you loved Swimming Home, this is your chance to try more of her work!
What Matters in Jane Austen by John Mullan
Perfect for celebrating the 200th anniversary of Pride and Prejudice‘s publication, this fascinating set of twenty essays investigates everything Austen-ish – from the importance of the seaside in Austen’s novels to whether there’s any sex and that all important question, just how much money is *enough*? This is great fun and gives real insight into the social conventions a modern reader might miss.
